Is it time to schedule a prostate screening?

Prostate cancer screening helps detect cancer early, making it easier to treat. Men ages 40–50+ are encouraged to talk to their physician about whether to undergo a screening. Colorado Mountain Medical’s primary care and urology specialists can screen for prostate cancer. If the results are abnormal, our team of trusted urology specialists can conduct further testing to determine if there is cancer, and help you decide on a course of action. Talk to your doctor about when a screening is recommended for you.

Symptoms, Diagnoses & Treatments

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is when the prostate and surrounding tissue expands. As you age, your prostate may get larger. BPH is when it gets large enough to cause problems such as squeezing the urethra. Gradually, as the bladder walls thicken over time, the bladder may weaken and lose the ability to empty fully. Urine then remains in the bladder which can cause many of the lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) of BPH. If you are not able to pass urine at all, or if you have renal failure, immediate attention is required. Other symptoms like a weak urine stream, waking up at all hours to urinate, having the urgent need to urinate frequently, or the need to push or strain, can be treated with Rezūm™ Water Vapor Therapy.

Rezūm™ Water Vapor Therapy is an alternative to surgery. It treats the cause of your BPH by reducing prostate tissue, so you can get back to your life. This short, in-office procedure uses the natural energy stored in a few drops of water to shrink the prostate. So urine can flow freely. There are no incisions, no general anesthesia, and most patients return to regular activities within a few days. And, it preserves sexual function.

How does Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy work?

Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy is a short, in-office procedure that uses the natural energy stored in water vapor, or steam, to shrink enlarged prostates. Rezūm Therapy is typically performed right in your urologist’s office, or at an outpatient surgery facility. During each 9-second treatment, sterile water vapor is released throughout the targeted prostate tissue. The number of treatments varies depending on the size of your prostate. Over time, your body’s natural healing response absorbs the treated tissue, shrinking the prostate. With the extra tissue removed, the urethra opens, reducing BPH symptoms. Most patients begin to experience symptom relief in as soon as two weeks, and maximum benefit may occur within three months.
